Fertilization Flashcards
Where does fertilization occur?
first 1/3 of uterine tube close to ovary
Penetration of zona pellucida
hundreds of sperm bind to zp, release acrosome to ‘digest’ it
acrosomal reaction
release of chemicals from acrosomal membrane
fusion of plasma membranes
dna enters oocyte. 2 sets from oocyte, 1 from sperm. sperm mitochondria destroyed, so only mother mitochondria is inherited.
polyspermy
more than one sperm fusing with oocyte
slow block to polyspermy
after 1 minute of fusion, no more sperm can enter oocyte. causes zona reaction.
zona reaction
breakdown of sperm binding molecules on zona pellucida. Blocks sperm.
pronuclei
(2) separate nuclei created after fusion
polar body II
removes 1 dna from oocyte, so sperm and ovum have 2 amounts of dna.
zygotic transcription
usage of both paternal and maternal dna. Mother runs cell for 8 hours, then father suppresses it and runs cell for awhile
syngamy
breakdown of pronuclei and combination of maternal and paternal dna. then prepares for cell divistion
