Female Reproductive Anatomy Flashcards
Primary Female sex organs
ovar(y/ies)
Secondary sex organs
Ducts: Uterine tubes, Uterus, Vagina
Ovaries
Organs that produce oocytes, and estrogens
Oocyte
an immature “egg”
Estrogens
female sex hormones. Regulate fertility cycle, aids pregnancy, and promotes development of secondary sex characteristics
Female secondary sex characteristics
Breast development, increased fat deposits beneath skin, onset of menses, and widening of pelvis
pubic symphysis
joint in front of middle of pelvis. normally does not allow movement, but softens before labor to provide extra flexibility. softening can disrupt balance
Uterine/Fallopian tubes
tubes to uterus
Uterus/Womb
where embryo/fetus is nourished and grows. Located between bladder and rectum. Takes up space and causes women to urinate more then men, especially during pregnancy. May also cause constipation
Bladder
stores urine.
Rectum
part of large intestine used to remove solid waste from the body
Uterus layers
Endometrium, Myometrium
Endometrium
inner layer of uterus. Receives and maintains the conceptus during pregnancy
Myometrium
middle layer of uterus. Muscular, pushes baby out.
Uterus regions
Fundus, Body, Cervix
Fundus
top of uterus. Medical professionals feel it to estimate the size of the womb
Body
middle area of uterus. Implantation occurs in this area
Cervix
narrow area at lower area of uterus. provides cervical mucus
Cervical mucus
mucus that blocks or allows passage through cervix
Vagina/birth canal
area of conjugal union, where baby will exit. Acidic for protection, but will also kill sperm
Vulva
female external genitals. Clitoris, Labia majora, Labia minora, Vestibule
Clitoris
sensitive erectile tissue
Labia majora
larger tissue folds of vulva. Surrounds labia minora
Labia minora
smaller tissue folds of vulva. Surrounds vestibule
Vestibule
space between labia minora. contains openings of vagina ant the urinary system. produces mucus
Anal intercourse
not part of design of reproductive system. More risks compared to penile-vaginal intercourse
Risks of Anal Intercourse
Anal damage, Disease transmission
Anal Damage from anal intercourse
Small anus size compared to vaginal opening, vagina can expand during conjugal union.
Disease transmission from anal intercourse
anal tissue is more fragile, no lubrication. Ruptured blood vessels provide easy access to blood supply for pathogens.
