Male Reoproductive Anatomy Flashcards
Primary sex organ
an organ that produces gametes. testes (men) and ovaries (women)
Gametes
sex cells (sperm and egg)
Secondary sex organs
organs that assist the primary sex organs
Male secondary sex organs
Ducts: Epididymis, Vas Deferens, Ejaculatory duct, Urethra
Glands: Seminal vesicles, Prostate, Bulbourethral
Test(is/es)
Produces testosterone
testosterone
a masculinizing sex hormone. Promotes sperm production, and growth and maturation of reproductive system. Lack of it causes infertility.
secondary sex characteristics
features induced in non-reproductive organs by sex hormones
secondary effects of testosterone
facial hare, bone and muscle growth, low voice
Scrotum
sac of skin that encloses testes. Allows testes to hang outside of body where it is cooler, and sperm can develop.
Seminiferous tubules
area where sperm are formed, where they gain a mature shape
rete testis
receives sperm from seminiferous tubules
Epididymis
receives sperm from rete testis. sperm gain the ability to swim
Vas deferens/ductus deferens
receives sperm from epididymis
Ejaculatory duct
receives sperm from vas deferens, and fluids from seminal vesicle
urethra
receives sperm from ejaculatory duct. traverses length of penis. takes sperm to outside
Overall path of sperm
seminiferous tubules > rete testis > epididymis > vas deferens > ejaculatory duct > urethra
Semen
sperm + seminal fluid. contains immunosuppressants to protect sperm from mother’s immune system
Seminal fluid
fluid produced by accessory glands. alkaline to neutralize acid in vagina, which slow down and kill sperm. Sugary to provide energy for sperm.
seminal vesicles
produce most of seminal fluid, and hormones to promote muscular contractions. empty into ejaculatory duct.
prostate
produces antibiotic seminal fluid. Empties into urethra. because it surrounds the urethra, uncontrolled growth can make urination difficult.
Bulbourethral glands
empties into urethra. produces mucus which is the first fluid to enter the urethra to clean it and lubricate conjugal union.
Erection
an enlarged rigid state of the penis.
Erectile tissue
tissue around urethra of penis. fills with blood to cause an erection
Ejaculation
ejection of semen from penis. Results in loss of erection
Foreskin
flap of skin covering end of penis
circumcision
removal of foreskin. Part of the old testament in Genesis 17:11
Pros of circumcision
may reduce std transition, and reduces risk of pathologies
Cons of circumcision
painful to newborn (may be reduced with pain medication).
Removes natural lubrication (decreases mother’s satisfaction)
Surgical complications
May not provide lifetime benefit
Genesis 17:11
Circumcise the flesh of your foreskin, ant that shall be the mark of the covenant between you and me.
