What are the layers of the pleura?
Visceral: Inner layer, covers the lungs.
Parietal: Outer layer, lines the chest wall.
Cavity: Space between the layers, filled with fluid to reduce friction.
What’s the difference between a thrombus and an embolism?
Thrombus: A blood clot that forms and stays in place.
Embolism: A clot or other substance that travels through the bloodstream and blocks another vessel.
What is pulmonary edema?
Fluid buildup in the lungs, causing difficulty breathing.
What is a pulmonary effusion?
Fluid buildup in the pleural cavity, between the lung and chest wall
What is atelectasis?
Collapse or incomplete expansion of the lung, reducing airflow.
What is bronchitis?
Inflammation of the bronchial tubes, causing coughing and mucus production
What is emphysema?
Damage to the air sacs (alveoli), leading to shortness of breath.
What is asthma?
A condition where the airways tighten and produce extra mucus, causing wheezing and difficulty breathing.
What is cystic fibrosis?
A genetic disorder causing thick, sticky mucus buildup in the lungs and other organs, leading to breathing problems
What is pertussis?
Also known as whooping cough, it’s a highly contagious infection causing severe coughing fits.
