GU System Flashcards
What is the function of amylase?
Breaks down starches into sugars; found in saliva and pancreatic fluid
What is the function of pepsin?
Breaks down proteins into peptides in the stomach
What is the function of lipase?
Breaks down fats into fatty acids and glycerol; secreted by the pancreas into the small intestine
What is the function of trypsin?
Breaks down proteins into smaller peptides in the small intestine; secreted by the pancreas
What is the function of lactase?
Breaks down lactose into glucose and galactose in the small intestine
What are the components of the renal corpuscle and their functions:
The glomerulus filters blood, and the Bowman’s capsule collects filtrate
What is the function of the proximal convoluted tubule (PCT)?
Reabsorbs water, sodium, glucose, and other nutrients
What is the main function of the Loop of Henle?
Establishes a concentration gradient for urine concentration. The descending limb reabsorbs water, and the ascending limb reabsorbs salts
What is the function of the collecting duct in the nephron?
Regulates water balance and urine concentration, influenced by ADH
Blood Filtration:
Removal of waste products and toxins
What is the primary function of the kidneys in waste removal?
Filter waste products (like urea and creatinine) and excess fluids from the blood to form urine.
How do kidneys help regulate blood pressure?
Activate the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS), which helps control blood pressure by regulating fluid volume and constricting blood vessels.
How do the kidneys maintain blood pH balance?
by excreting hydrogen ions (H⁺) and reabsorbing bicarbonate (HCO₃⁻) to maintain normal pH levels.
What is dialysis and when is it required?
A treatment for kidney failure that removes waste, excess fluids, and balances electrolytes when kidneys cannot. It is required when kidney function is severely impaired
What are the two main types of dialysis?
Hemodialysis: Blood is filtered through a machine outside the body.
Peritoneal Dialysis: Uses the peritoneum (abdominal lining) to filter blood.
