What is the Menstrual Cycle and its purpose?
A regular monthly process in woman that prepares the body for pregnancy, involving hormonal changes, ovulation, and menstruation
What are the phases of the menstrual cycle?
Follicular Phase (Days 1-14): Egg matures in the ovary
Ovulation (Around Day 14): Egg is released.
Luteal Phase (Days 15-28): Uterine lining thickens.
Menstruation (Days 1-5): If no pregnancy occurs, the lining sheds.
What is the male gamete?
Sperm, produced in the testes. It fertilizes the female egg during reproduction
What is the female gamete?
The egg (ovum), produced in the ovaries. It is fertilized by sperm during reproduction.
What are the three trimesters of pregnancy?
First (0-12 weeks): Fertilization and early fetal development.
Second (13-26 weeks): Fetal growth, organ maturation.
Third (27-40 weeks): Final growth, preparation for birth.
What happens during early pregnancy (first trimester)?
Fertilization of the egg by sperm forms a zygote.
The zygote becomes a blastocyst and implants in the uterine wall.
Hormones (e.g., hCG) support pregnancy and prevent menstruation.
What are common STIs?
Chlamydia: Bacterial, may cause infertility.
Gonorrhea: Bacterial, causes discharge, pain during urination.
Syphilis: Bacterial, causes sores, can be serious if untreated.
HPV (Human Papillomavirus): Viral, causes warts, linked to cancer.
Herpes (HSV): Viral, causes sores, recurrent
How can STIs be prevented?
Condom use: Reduces transmission risk.
Vaccination: For HPV and hepatitis B.
Regular screenings: Especially for sexually active individuals.
