Mouth:
The entry point for food where mechanical digestion (chewing) and chemical digestion (saliva enzymes) begin
Esophagus:
A muscular tube that connects the mouth to the stomach, moving food via peristalsis
Stomach:
A sac-like organ that secretes acid and digestive enzymes to break down food, turning it into chyme
Small Intestine:
A long, coiled tube where most digestion and nutrient absorption occur; divided into the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum
Large Intestine (Colon):
Absorbs water and salts from undigested food, forming solid waste (feces)
Liver:
A large organ that processes nutrients from the small intestine, detoxifies chemicals, and produces bile to aid in fat digestion
Gallbladder:
A small organ that stores bile produces by the liver, releasing it into the small intestine to help digest fats
Pancreas:
A gland that produces digestive enzymes and bicarbonate to neutralize stomach acid in the small intestine; also regulates blood sugar via insulin production
Rectum:
The final section of the large intestine, where feces are stored before elimination
Anus:
The opening at the end of the digestive tract through which feces are expelled from the body
Amylase:
Digestive enzyme; that breaks down starches into sugars; found in saliva and pancreatic fluid
