Respiration And Metabolism Flashcards
What is respiration?
The transfer of energy from glucose and occurs in every cell
How is the energy release by respiration used?
Animals:
Muscle contraction
Keeping warm
Amino acids linked to to form proteins
Plants:
Moving minerals into cells in plants
Glucose converted to cellulose
Both:
Glucose stored as starch/glycogen
What kind of reaction is respiration
Exothermic
What is metabolism?
The sum of all chemical reaction that occur in the body
Where does aerobic respiration take place and how much energy?
In the mitochondria, 38 atp molecules
Where does anaerobic respiration take place
During vigorous activity
What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration in muscles?
Glucose ->lactic acid (+2 atp molecules)
What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration in plants and fungi (fermantation and alcoholic drinks)
Glucose -> ethanol + carbon dioxide (+2 atp molecules)
What is aerobic respiration and anaerobic respiration?
Aerobic=complete breakdown/oxidation
Anaerobic=incomplete breakdown
Where and what does lactic acid do?
Build up in muscle and causes muscle fatigue
How is lactic acid removed (word equation)?
Lactic acid + oxygen -> carbon
(Toxic) dioxide + water
Why do you keep heavy breathing after exercise?
Need oxygen to break lactic acid down
What is the oxygen debt?
The amount of O2 needed to break down the accumulated lactic acid
What is an alternative way to get rid of lactic acid?
Blood contain lactic acid travels from the muscles to the liver where it is converted back to glucose
