Cell Specialisation Flashcards
Acrosome (where and what)
Sperm cell, contains enzymes to break through the eggs outer layer
Dentrites (where and what)
Nerve cell, connect with other cells
Tail (where and what)
Sperm cells, swim towards the egg
Excessive mitochondria (where)
Between nucleus and tail of the sperm cells
Axon (where and what)
Nerve cell, long conducts electrical impulses in one direction
Myelin sheath (where and what)
Nerve cell, insulate the impulse
Synapse (where and what)
Nerve cell, send neurotransmitter chemicals to another nerve cell or effector
Synapses
Nerve cells, send neurotransmitter chemicals to another nerve cell or effector
What makes muscle cells contract?
Special proteins that slide past each other making muscle fibres contract
What do muscle cells have a lot of?
Mitochondria for contractions
What do muscle cells store
Glycogen
Root hair cell specialisation ( special characteristics)
Long hair like to increase surface area, lots of mitochondria for active transport
What do xylem cells do?
Transport water from the roots to the leaves
What do phloem cells do?
Transport the products of photosynthesis from the leaves to the rest of the plants
What are companion cells and what do they do?
Either side of phloem cells that have many mitochondria to transfer to phloem cells
