Preventing The Spread Of Pathogens Flashcards
What are pathogens
Microorganisms that cause disease
What are some type of pathogens?
Fungi, bacteria, protists and viruses
What do bacteria release?
Toxins
What do viruses do?
They infect a cell and duplicate making thousands of copies.
When they have completely filled the cell they burst out of it
This leaves big gaps in the cell membrane causing it to perish
What is an example of a way a pathogen is caught by a droplet, what is the entry point, defence and prevention for it?
Sneeze cough
Breathing system
Mucus, Cilia
Tissue (sneeze in it), isolation, disinfect surfaces
What is the role of the Mucus and the cilia as a defence system and where are they found? How is the Mucus then getting rid of?
The Mucus helps to trap any pathogens
Cilia are hair like projections that waft the Mucus back up to the of your airway.
It is then swalloed to then go in the stomach where the hychloric acid will digest and kill it
What is an example of a way a pathogen is caught by food and drinks, what is the entry point, defence and prevention for it?
Uncooked, poor hygiene, contaminated water
Digestive system
Hydrochloric acid (stomach)
Disinfect surfaces, good hygiene, clean water
What is an example of a way a pathogen is caught by direct contact, what is the entry point, defence and prevention for it?
Sexually transmitted illnesses (STI) (skin), HIV virus (body fluid e.g blood thats been contaminated), vectors e.g mosquito.
Skin, blood
White blood cells, but sometimes antibiotics are needed or it is uncurable e.g HIV
Condom for STI, don’t share needles (drugs) epuipment sterilised, insecticide for vectors
What are vectors?
Organisms that do not cause disease themselves, but spread infection by conveying pathogens fr one host to another, usually insects
