respiration Flashcards
what happens during aesrobic respiration
glucose reacts with oxygen to give the orgnism enough energy
whats an exothermic reaction
the reaction transfers to the surroudnung enviroment
what is aerobic respirational equation
backwards photosynthesis
where does respiration take place
mitochondria
what do living cells use respiration for
energy is used for building up molecules
breaking down molecules such as in digestion
muscles contracting requires energy
to maintain a body temp energy from respiration keeps us warm and in the heat we can lose it
plants use it to convert glucose into amino acids, intake of nitrates
what are muscles made of
glycogen that can be converted back to glucose and used during excerise to give energy for muscle contractions
mitrocondria to have energy
muscle fibres in blockd which contrsct to cause movement
what happens to the heart during excersise
heart rate ibcreases and arties widen which increases oxygen blood flow to muscles and removal of co2
arteries widen to heighten the concentration gradient and flow of blood so more oxygen can center and more co2 can leave
whats happens to the lungs during exercise
breaths are more deep and often so oxygen is brought into body faster and the RBC can bring more to the muscles, more co2 can be carried away and out
whats anaerobic respiration
when the glucose molecules are not brpken down completely and they re working without oxygen they form lactic acid
explain oxygen debt
when youre still tired after working out its because the alctic acid made anaerobically needs to beconverted back to glucose in the liver with oxygen, heart rate stays high to continue supplying oxygen needed to pay off the oxygen debt at a speed
what happens when plants respire anaerobically
they produce ethanol and co2 instead of lactic acid
what is metabolism
the sum of all of the reactions in the body
common metabolic reactions
glucose being turned into starch glycogen and cellulose
reactions of photosynthesis and respiration
use of glucose and minerals to make animo acids
functions of the liver
detoxifying poisons
storing iron
breaking own old blood cells
passing down waste products to be excreeted in the urea
how does the liver remove lactic acid
oxygen debt is epaid once its tranfomed back to glucose which is turned into co2 and water in aeobic respiration. glucose can also be stored as glycogen in the liver
