Research Methods : Descriptive Statistics Flashcards
Whats a descriptive statistic?
Use of graphs, tables + summary stats to identify trends and analyse sets of data
Whats an inferential statistic?
Where a statistical test is calculated in order to draw conclusions about hypotheses
Whats the mean?
the average → add all values, divide by number you added, used with interval + ratio
Advs of mean
Takes into account all data (more representative)
Disadvs of mean
Easily distorted by anomalies
Whats the median?
the middle → arrange scores from lowest to highest and identify the middle, ordinal data
Advs of median
Less effected by extreme scores
Disadvs of median
Doesn’t take into account all data (not representative)
Whats the mode?
most frequent → most common score, nominal
Advs of mode
• only average nominal data can use
• easy to calculate
Mode Disadvs
• very basic and not representative
• not useful when data is bimodal/ doesn’t have a mode
Whats bimodal?
When there are toe values
Whats measured of dispersion?
Describe the spread of data around a central value
Whats the range?
the difference → sub lowest from highest, median or mean
Range advs
• quick + easy to calculate
