Research Methods : Aims and Hypothesis Flashcards
Aim
A general statement about what the instigator will research
Independent variable
The variable manipulated throughout the test
Dependant variable
The variable which results are recorded
Extraneous variable
A variable you are nor testing for or including in a test but may alter the end results (e.g. gender, age)
Hypothesis
A precise and testable statement of what the researchers predict will be the outcome of the study made prior to the Keats being carried out
Operationalisation
Turning abstract concepts into measurable observations
Types of hypothesis: Null hypothesis
predicts no difference/ relationship between groups/ conditions (difference due to chance)
Types of hypothesis: alternative hypothesis
Predicts a difference/ relationship between gourds/ conditions
Types of hypothesis: Directional hypothesis (one tailed)
Predicts a difference/ relationship between groups/ conditions and states the directions of the difference/ relationship
Types of hypothesis: Non-directional hypothesis (two tailed)
Predicts a difference/ relationship between groups/ conditions but doesnt state the direction of the difference/ relationship
When is directional hypothesis used?
When the hypothesis is based on theories or has been carried out before
When is non-directional hypothesis used?
When the hypothesis is not based on theories or if new hypothesis or finding contract past research
