Research Methods -> Aims & Hypotheses Flashcards
Aim
An aim is a statement of a study’s purpose. The aim will also state whether your study is a test of difference or a relationship between two variables.
Hypothesis
A hypothesis states precisely what the researcher believes to be true and needs to be fully operationalised. In other words, the variables need to be clearly and precisely defined.
Directional (One-tailed) hypothesis:
a specific prediction is made about whether, for example the relationship between two variables will be positive or negative or that one group will perform better than the other group
Non-directional (two tailed) hypothesis:
predicts that there will be a relationship between two variables but does not state whether it will be positive or negative, or states there will be a significant difference but not state which group will perform better.
