Research Laboratory: Explaining Illusions 3.3.2 Flashcards
What is Ames room?
A distorted room that creates visual illusions
-uses various distortions in size, shape, and distance to create illusion
-floor is slanted (illusion of height)
What is Ebbinghaus illusion?
Shows that context is important to visual perception
-surrounding information to determine the size
(the circles are actually the same size)

What is an optical illusion?
Misinterpretations of visual stimuli
What is Müller-Lyer illusion?
Two lines with arrows. One line seems to be longer than the other, however both lines are the same length despite the arrows

What is the Penrose triangle?
(Penrose Tribar) shape that can only exist on paper but cannot be created as a physical object
- the left side moving away from you and the right side moving towards you.
-almost impossible to recreate as an object

What is a perceptual illusion?
Misinterpretations of sensory stimuli
-used to understand the human perceptual system
