Principles of Classical Conditioning 4.2.1 Flashcards
What is classical conditioning?
Type of learning that involves creating an association between a naturally existing stimulus and a previously neutral one
ex.
What is a conditioned response (CR)?
The automatic, learned response to the previously neutral stimulus
What is a conditioned stimulus (CS)?
The previously neutral stimulus that has acquired the ability to trigger a reaction because it was associated with the unconditioned stimulus
What is the contingency model of conditioning?
Showed that not all stimulus-response pairings result in conditioning
What is the Garcia Effect?
An aversion or distaste for a particular taste or smell that is associated with a negative reaction, named after American Psychologist Dr. John Garcia
What is a neutral stimulus (NS)?
A stimulus that initially does not evoke a response until it is paired with the unconditioned stimulus
(does not have purpose until after it is used)
What is respondent conditioning?
Learning of a new response when two stimuli are paired together
What is a unconditioned response (UCR)?
An unlearned response that occurs automatically when the unconditioned stimulus is presented
What is a unconditioned stimulus (UCS)?
A naturally occurring stimulus that triggers a specific response
