Q

What is brightness constancy?

A

Ability to perceive the brightness of an object as being the same regardless of light levels

ex. snow on two different days with different light levels. The snow is the same but it was only the light from the sun that was different

The influence environmental factors have on you perception of a stimulus(something happening).
relates to top-down processing

Q

What is figure-ground perception?

A

Helps decide where to focus your attention on and which information to overlook.

Ex. when you are looking for something you have lost
simplifying the figure and background

Q

What is Gestalt psychology?

A

How humans naturally tend to group the things they see in certain patterns

looking at a whole picture to understand instead a part of it
understating in groups

ex. you tend to group the members in a band based on patterns

gestalt = “shape of an entity’s complete form”

What is location constancy?

A

Ability to perceive stationary objects while moving

ex. driving but being able to see trees and stores

Q

What is perceptual constancy?

A

A skill that enables you to perceive objects as stable or unchanging even though your eyes may see them differently

ex. a car getting farther down a road (same size, but the distance is changing)

Q

What is principle of closure?

A

tendency to fill in the gaps and perceive the object as complete.

even when an image does not seem complete your brain tends to fill in the gaps to perceive the images as complete

Q

What is principle of continuity?

A

Describes the tendency to see continuous patterns.

ex. when you see a type of continuous pattern you assume they belong together

Q

What is principle of Pragnanz(simplicity)?

A

States you naturally perceive objects in their simplest form

when your brain is presented with complex objects it will do its best to simplify them much as possible

Q

What is shape constancy?

A

The fact the shape of an object is perceived as constant, irrespective of its orientation (no matter where it is)

ex. door at its different angles is still constant

Q

What is size constancy?

A

Perception of an object’s size will not change, even when the object changes based on distance or angle

even though the retinal image changes depending on the distance

ex. car heading into the distance
