Chemical and Body Sensations 3.4.3 Flashcards
What is the gate control-theory of pain?
States that your experience of pain depends on whether pain impulses are able to push beyond the neurological gate of the spinal cord
(push beyond the nervous system)
-spinal cord can block the pain message to the brain (however if the pain pushes past the “gate” then you will feel the full force of it)
-emotion plays a role (can make things worse)
-brain can close the gate
What is gustation?
The sense of taste
-chemical sense f
What is gustatory complex?
Responsible for the perception of taste (analyze)
-near the somatosensory cortex
What is kinesthesis (kinesthetic sense)?
The ability to sense the position of movement of your body parts
ex.
drinking water
What is mechanoreceptors?
Cells that process touch
(4 distinct sense of touch: pressure, warmth, cold, and pain)
What is nociceptors?
Process tissue damage and the sense of pain for touch
(all other senses are combined by the 4)
What is olfaction?
Sense of smell
(as people age their sense of smells tends to decline)
-chemical sense
What is a olfactory bulb?
A bulb-like structure at the tip of the frontal lobe where the olfactory nerves begin
-helps with the perception of smell/odors
What are olfactory receptor cells?
Receptor cells that contain tiny hairs, or cilia, that pick up the scent
-located in nasal cavity
-factory of receptor cells
What is a pain circuit?
The process of sensory receptors sensing potentially harmful stimuli
(sends signal to spinal cord, that passed to the brain for processing)
What is proprioception?
The awareness of your body’s position and movement
What is taste buds?
Groupings of taste receptor cells with hair-like extensions
-humans can perceive sweet, salty, sour, bitter, and umami
(all other senses are combined by the 4)
What are thermoreceptors?
Process temperature changes for touch
What is vestibular sense?
The the sense of body position and balance
What is pain?
Mixture of sensation and emotion
(nerves throughout you body are sensitive)
