Reproductive System Flashcards
What are the 3 sections to the reproductive systems?
- gonads (testes/ovaries)
- ducts
- accessory glands
what are the two tunics that surround the male testes?
- tunica vaginalis
- tunica albuginea
what kind of tubules have sustentacular and Leydig cells to support growing gametes?
Seminiferous tubules
List the ducts in order from which sperm originates to where it leaves the body.
- epididymis
- vas ductus deferens
- ejaculatory duct
- urethra
describe the parts of the penis.
- root
- body/shaft
- glans penis (enlarged tip)
- there are three bodies of erectile tissue- 2 corpora cavernosa(dorsal portion of root and shaft)
- 1 corpus spongiosum - the glans and midventral portion, surrounding the urethra
penile accessory glands: 2 posterior to the bladder and secrete an alkaline fluid that contains fructose and composes 60% of semen.
Seminal vesicles
penile accessory glands: 1 inferior to bladder and encircles the prostatic urethra, 30% of semen.
prostate
penile accessory glands: 2 inferior to the prostate and secrete a thick alkaline mucus and makes up 5% of semen.
Bulbourethral glands
Name the 4 histological layers of the female ovaries. and what are the structures holding them in place?
- ovarian mesothelium - surface epithelium
- tunica albuginea - CT
- Ovarian cortex - contains ovarian follicles - surround immature eggs
- ovarian medulla - blood, lymph, nerves. CT
a. ovarian ligament - to uterus
b. suspensory ligament - to pelvic wall
c. mesovarium
there are three sections to the fallopian tubes, name them:
infundibulum
- suspended over ovary with finger-like projections = fimbriae
Ampulla - fertilization occurs here
isthmus - connects to uterus
Describe the three layers of the uterus.
a. perimetrium - visceral peritoneum
b. myometrium - 3 layers of smooth muscle
c. endometrium - mucous membrane
- 2 layers: 1 = stratum functionalis -shed monthly 2= stratum basalis - permanent, undergoes mitosis to replace functionalis.
Name the follicular development in a female.
- primordial follicle
- primary follicle
- secondary follicle
4 vesicular follicle - corpus luteum
- corpus Albicans
