The pronephros

What is the cloaca?
The common opening for the gut tube and the urinary system - humans don’t have this after birth but birds do
When does the mesonephros form?
Around 6 weeks
What forms the gonadal ridge?
Thickening of the medial part of the mesonephric ridge
What is an indifferent gonad?
The gonad before it has differentiated into being male or female - impossible to tell gender
What is the paramesonephric duct?
A tube that forms by invaginating laterally to the mesonephric duct
What are the openings of the paremesonephric ducts?
Cranially - Peritoneal cavity
Caudally - Cross ventral to mesonephric ducts into the urogenital sinus
What are other names for the mesonephric duct and the paramesonephric duct?
Mesonephric - Wolffian
Paramesonephric - Mullerian
What happens to the mesonephric duct in males?
Develops into epididymis. vas deferens, and seminal vesicle
What happens to the paramesonephric duct in males?
Degenerates
What happens to the urogenital sinus in males?
Forms the bladder, urethra, and prostate
What happens to the mesonephric duct in females?
Degenerates
What happens to the paramesonephric duct in females?
Develops into the fallopian tube, uterus, cervix, and upper part of the vagina
What happens to the urogenital sinus in females?
Forms the bladder and lower part of the vagina
