What are general features of the breast?
Modified and highly specialised sweat glands
No special capsule or sheath
Present in males and females but much more developed in females

What are the borders of the breast?
Vertically - 2nd/3rd rib to 6th rib
Transverse - Sternal edge to midaxillary line
What is the axillary tail?
A small part of the breast that may extend to the axillary fossa
What is the function of the retromammary bursa?
Allows a degree of movement
What does the breast lie over?
Top 2/3rds over pecoral fascia/pec major
Bottom third rests on serratus anterior
What keeps the breast attached to the dermis?
Suspensory ligament of cooper
What is the nipple?
The prominence of the breast

Lactiferous duct

Dilated part of the lactiferous duct

Numerous sweat and sebaceous glands which secrete oily material to provide lubricant for the nipple and areola
