-Located in teh scrotum
Testes
Gland that secretes fluid that activates and mobilizes sperm
-Doughnut shaped
-Sits below the bladder
Prostate gland
Acute inflammation in the testicles
-Occurs in boys under the age of 10
-Due to an infection, most commonly the mumps
-Usually does not cause issues later in life
Orchitis
Inflammation of the prostate gland
-May be acute or chronic
-May be bacterial or idiopathic
-May be asymptomatic or present with symptoms
Prosatitis
Edema in the scrotum; abnormal collection of fluid in any sacculated cavity in the body
-Often the result of a defect or irritation within the urinary or reproductive system
-Usually congenital
-Most common in children ages 1-2
-May be the result of another condition or trauma in adults
-May be asymptomatic
Hydrocele
-Most common infectious diseases in the US
-Over 20 identified
-AIDS, chlamydia, genital herpes, genital warts, gonorrhea, and syphilis among the most significant
Sexually transmitted diseases
Failure of the testicles to descend into the scrotum
-Idiopathic
-Occurs in infants, usually observed around 36 weeks of age
Cryptorchism (Cryptorchidism)
Essential organ of the female reproductive system that produce and store eggs and produce female hormones (estrogen and progesterone)
-Production of egg occurs here
Ovaries
Passageway for an egg to move from the ovaries to the uterus
-Fertilization of egg takes place here
Fallopian tubes
Organ that holds a fertilized egg during pregnancy
-Located behind the bladder in the pelvis
-Contains mucous membrane (endometrium), muscle layer (myomertrium), and outer layer (perimetrium)
-Cervix is the lower, narrow portion
Uterus
Muscular tube in the pelvic cavity
Vagina
Inflammation of the lining of the uterus
Endometritis
Inflammation of the uterus and the cervix
Endocervicitis
Inflammation of the fallopian tube
Salpingitis
Inflammation of the ovary
Oophoritis
