Lymphatic disorders Flashcards
Watery fluid formed in the tissue spaces that returns excess fluid and protein molecules to the blood
-Also responsible for transporting lymphocytes
-Lymph is filtered at the lymph nodes
-Lymphatic vessels are similar to veins
-Lymph eventually drains into the venous system and back into the R atrium
Lymph
Masses of lymphoid tissue that trap pathogens
Tonsils
Endocrine gland in the chest that helps white blood cells to mature and function properly
Thymus gland
Filters and stores blood and produces white blood cells
Spleen
Inflammation of the tonsils
-Caused by an infection
-Tonsils become enlarged, red, and contain spots from the microorganism
-Can progress into severe respiratory difficulties
Tonsilitis
Inflammation of the lymph vessels
-Associated with local and systemic pain
-Could indicate that an infection is spreading
-Spreads quickly and can be fatal
Lymphagitis
Enlargement of the spleen
-May be caused by an infection (viral, parasitic, bacterial), cirrhosis of the liver, inflammation of the gall bladder, or another infection
-Rupture of the spleen is possible
Splenomegaly
Enlargement of the lymph nodes
-Caused by an excess of lymphocytes and leukocytes in the node or by a tumor in the node
-Can occur due to cancer, inflammation of the thyroid, autoimmune diseases, or drug reactions
Lymphadenopathy
An abnormal accumulation of tissue fluid in the interstitial spaces due to lymphatic disturbances
-Buildup occurs between the skin and the muscles
-Chronic
-Often associated with cancer, a lymphatic blockage, surgery, or radiation
-Ranges in severity
Lymphedema
Inflammation in the lymph nodes
-Can be localized or generalized
-Usually because of an infection elsewhere in the body
Lymphadenitis
Malignancy of lymphoid tissue
-Causes some cells in the lymphatic system to grow abnormally and out of control
-These cells spread very easily throughout the body
-2 types
Lymphoma
Reed Sternberg cells develop which are a malignant form of B lymphocytes
-B lymphocytes normally produce antibodies but Reed-Sternberg cells are malignant and nonfunctional
Hodgkin’s lymphoma
All forms of lymphoma that do not present with Reed-Sternberg cells
-Disease is actually a collection of varied lymphoma
-Usually begins in a lymph node
Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
