Reproduction (Plants) Flashcards
Gamete Production in Plants
The flower’s job is to allow the plant to reproduce through sexual reproduction. The anthers produces the plants male sex cells, these are the pollen grains. The ovary produces the female sex cells, the ovules.
Parts of Plant - Stigma
Catches the pollen grains.
Parts of Plant - Stamen
It is the male part of the flower.
It’s made of two parts.
Part 1 - Anther - produces the pollen grains.
Part 2 - Filament - Attaches the anther to the flower head.
Parts of Plant - Petal
Petals job is to attract insects.
Parts of Plant - Ovary
Where ovules are made.
Parts of Plant- Sepal
Protected the flower bud before the flower opened.
Parts of Plant - Nectary
Nectar is made in the nectary.
Nectar is a sticky, sweet, sugary liquid that
attracts insects.
Plant Fertilisation
- An insect brings pollen grains. They land on the flower’s stigma.
- Each pollen grains (male sex cells) starts to grow a pollen tube to get down to find an ovule (female sex cell).
- The pollen tube reaches an ovule. The nucleus of the pollen grain travels down the pollen tube. It joins up with an ovule.
Thus a new plant has been created.
