Life on Earth - Distribution of Organisms T4 Flashcards
Biotic factors
Factors associated with living organisms. For example predation, grazing and disease.
Abiotic factors
Non living factors for example soil pH, temperature and soil moisture.
Indicator species
An indicator species is a species that by its presence or absence shows the environmental quality/levels of pollution of an area.
Examples include lichens and freshwater invertebrates. .
Pitfall Traps
Measure the abundance of organisms in an area.
Minimise errors- make sure top of trap is level with soil/ repeat.
Quadrat
Measure the abundance of plants in an area.
Minimise errors - throw quadrants randomly/ repeat.
pH Meter
Measures pH of the soil.
Wipe probe down after using to avoid cross contamination from previous tests.
Light Meter
Measures light levels in an area.
Ensure that you are not shading the probe.
Moisture Meter
Measures the moisture levels in the soil.
Wipe probe down to avoid cross contamination between previous tests.
Soil Thermometer
Measures temperature of soil.
Repeat.
