Mitosis Flashcards
Stage Juan
Before mitosis the chromosomes are long thin structures in the nucleus which are not visible even under a microscope.
Stage Dos
Before mitosis can begin each chromosome must replicate to form two identical chromatids joined at the centromere. At the beginning of mitosis the chromosomes condense and become visible and the nuclear membrane then begins to break down.
Stage the one after dos (3)
The pairs of chromatids line up along the equator of the cell. Spindle fibres from each of the two poles of the cell join to each of the pairs of chromatids at the centromere.
Stage 4
The spindle fibres pull the chromatids apart to opposite ends (poles) of the cell. Each of the separate chromatids are now described as chromosomes.
Stage 5
The nuclear membranes reform and the cytoplasm divides.
Stage 6
Two daughter cells have been formed which are diploid - they have the same chromosome complement as the parent cell.

Mitosis definition
Mitosis is the process of nuclear division which results in two identical daughter nuclei (and cells).
Chromosome compliment
It is important that the two daughter nuclei (and cells) are identical as this means that the number of chromosomes (chromosome complement) has been maintained by the next generation of cells.
Why do we need Mitosis
It is required for the growth and repair of cells.
