Repro drugs Flashcards
Oestrogen
Stimulates growth of breast and endometrial tissues. Stimulates production of progesterone receptors
S/E Oestrogen
Water retention, Bx tender, endo, overy, breast Ca if unopposed
Progesterone
Increase breast and endometrium. Maintains pregnancy, Inhibits production of oestrogen receptors
S/E Progesterone
Weight gain, retention, N/V, anabolic, acne, PMS
Testosterone
Stimulates male characteristics, body hair, deep voice, aggression.
S/E testosterone
Acne, voice changes, aggression, decreased HDL and increase plaque
COCP
Interrupt physiological, inhibit ovulation
S/E COCP
VTE, CYP450 metabolised. Reduced effect with Phenytoin and St John’s wort as they are inducers
Alendronic acid
Bisphosphonates- Control osteoclast activity and decrease bone turnover.
Finesteride
5 alpha reductase inhibitor- stop testosterone to dihydrotestosterone so stop enlarging prostate
Doxazosin
A blocker- relax bladder neck and EUS smooth muscle
Tamoxifen
Selective oestrogen receptor modulator- agonist in endo and antag in breast. Causes cells to arrest in cycle.
Clomiphene
Selective oestrogen receptor modulator- treat anovulation as competes with oestrogen and increases production of anterior pituitary hormones.
MIfepristone
Oral anti progestational agent, functioning as a synthetic competitive inhibitor of the progesterone receptor. Terminates pregnancy. Sensitise myometrium to progesterone induced contractions
