rep bio Flashcards
Air enters the body through the nose or mouth. The nose is preferred because it filters, humidifies, and warms the air.
Nasal Cavity and Mouth
Contains the vocal cords, located between the pharynx and the trachea. acts as a gateway in the respiratory system, allowing air to pass from the throat to the trachea (windpipe) while simultaneously protecting the airway by preventing food and liquid from entering the lungs during swallowing.
Larynx (Voice Box):
The passageway for air to enter the trachea.
Pharynx (Throat)
A tube that carries air to the lungs.
Trachea (Windpipe)
Bronchi and Bronchioles: The trachea divides into two primary bronchi, which further divide into smaller bronchioles, leading to the alveoli. The bronchi carry air into your lungs. At the end of the bronchi, the bronchioles carry air to small sacs in your lungs called alveoli.
Bronchi and Bronchioles
Tiny air sacs in the lungs where gas exchange occurs.
Alveoli
A dome-shaped muscle at the base of the lungs. It plays a crucial role in the mechanics of breathing. It contracts and relaxes, which changes the air pressure in the chest cavity and causes air to move in and out of the lungs
Diaphragm
