renal tubular acidosis Flashcards
1
Q
what is type 1
A
pathology in the distal tubule, distal tubule unable to secrete H ions
2
Q
causes of type 1
A
- genetic
- SLE
- sjogrens
- hyperthyroidism
- sickle cell anaemia
- marfans
3
Q
presentation of type 1
A
- failure to thrive in children
- hyperventilation
- CKD
- bone disease (osteomalacia)
4
Q
signs of type 1
A
- hypokalaemia
- metabolic acidosis
- high urine pH (>4)
5
Q
treatment for type 1
A
oral bicarbonate
6
Q
what is type 4
A
caused by reduced aldosterone
aldosterone increases excretion of hydrogen, no aldosterone means increase in hydrogen
7
Q
causes of type 4
A
- adrenal insufficiency
- SLE
- diabetes
- HIV
8
Q
signs of type 4
A
- hyperkalaemia
- high chloride
- metabolic acidosis
- low urinary pH
9
Q
what type has a high urinary pH
A
type 2
10
Q
management of type 4
A
fludrocortisone +/- sodium bicarbonate
treat hyperkalaemia
