What are darker pink areas seen on special stains of glomerulonephritis?
basement membrane thickened
What infection could cause glomerulonephritis?
a systemic one (no really related to kidney infection)
What do kidneys look like in glomerulonephritis?
small bilaterally (due to atrophy of tubules), with scarred surfaces
What systemic conditions is glomerulonephritis associated with?
SLE, TB, diabetes, vasculitis, amyloidosis, Goodpastures
Where does pyelonephritis affect?
renal pelvis
What is seen in acute pyelonephritis?
pus and abscess formation
What is seen in chronic pyelonephritis?
scarring
What effect does hypertension have on the kidney?
atheroma formation can obstruct blood flow to kidney causing ischaemia of kidney
What appears in malignant hypertension in kidney?
fibroid necrosis
onion skin
What lesion can be seen in diabetic glomerulonephropathy?
Kimell-Woolskin lesion
due to hyperfiltration
What is acquired cystic disease associated with?
dialysis
What is hydronephrosis?
water in renal pelvis
usually caused by obstruction
chronic incomplete voiding/prolapse of vaginal wall
What may hydronephrosis present with if unilateral?
pain/infection
What is a sign of a poor prognosis in renal cell carcinoma?
if spreads to IVC
