Ethnic Religion
A religion identified with a specific ethnic group or tribal group that does not seek converts.
Universalizing Religion
A religion that actively seeks new members and believers its message has universal importance application.
Animism
based on the belief that the nonhuman world is spiritual and that everything - from animals, to rocks, to plants, to rivers- can have a spiritual essence and sometimes a soul.
Secularism
the principle of separating religion from political, social, and educational institutions, promoting a society where religious beliefs do not influence public policy or governance.
Fundamentalism
Literal interpretation and strict adherence to basic principles of a religion.
Theocracy
a state whose government is either believed to be divinely guided or a state under the control of a group of religious leaders.
Caste
System in India that gives every Indian a particular place in the social hierarchy from birth.
Monotheism
Relating to the belief in only one god.
Polytheism
The belief in many gods.
Denomination
A division of a branch that unites a number of local congregations in a single legal and administrative body.
Religious Branch
A large and fundamental division within a religion.
Sect
A relatively small group that has broken away from an established denomination.
Intrafaith conflict
a dispute between two or more branches/sects of the same religion.
Interfaith conflict
a dispute between two different religions.
Autonomous religion
A religion that does not have a central authority but shares ideas and cooperates informally.
