How did the Indian Rebellion begin?
Began w those serving in the Bengal Army, with grievances about pay and conditions of service exploding, though the traditional explanation was animal fat in Enfield rifles, it was actually about the anger felt by nobles and cultural grievances.
Narrative of events in the Indian revellion
- Sepoys refuse to follow orders in February in Bengal
- Sepoys in Meerat turn on British officers and mob white Europeans.
- Seize control in most norther cities (e.g. Lucknow and Cawnpore)
- Attempt to restore the Mughal Emperor. Joined by landowners and peasants.
What did the British do immediately after the Rebellion?
Emperor’s sons quickly executed, Delhi and Lucknow devastated with villages burnt, rebels tortured, more brutality as British officers and wives and kids had been murdered.
When was British authority reasserted in India?
June 1858
What did the British like to think about their style of rule?
That they were fair and improved life, but the legal system favoured them, as it was too expensive for the locals, and the educational system benefits richer indians, and there was nothing for the peasant class.
How did the British style of rule change after the rebellion?
They tried to more sensitive, but were also more confident of their superiority and dismissive of Indian culture, and the belief that India could be Westernised was questioned.
