What happened with the rise of compulsory schooling?
Adolescents were barred from the labour force and had increased free time. There was also an increased affluence of teens in the 70s.
Does working make teens more responsible?
There is very little evidence of this
What is premature affluence?
Having more income than one can manage maturely-results from getting used to luxury before having financial responsibilities.
How many hours of work per week can begin to jeopardize school performance and engagement?

What are long hours of work associated with?
Possible increased aggression, school misconduct, minor delinquency and promiscuous sexual activity. Delinquent youths may also choose to work longer hours
How are poverty and working at an earlier age associated?
Makes drop out more likely among impoverished youth
When is a teens mood at it’s most positive versus most negative?
Most positive when with friends, most negative when alone
What is a flow experience?
When an activity is both enjoyable and absorbing.

During extracurriculars
What is the most positive way for adolescents to spend their free time in terms of psychological development?
Structured activities
Which groups are extracurricular activities more prevalent for?
Affluent students, better grades, smaller schools
What are some benefits of extracurricular activities?
Improved school performance, reduces dropout, deters delinquency, enhances psychological well-being and social status
What can school-sponsored activities help with?
Strengthening the students attachment to school, especially strong in adolescents who are less able students and from poor communities
What is routine activity theory?
The idea that the less structured an activity, the more likely a person is to encounter opportunities for problem behaviours
What is the strongest deterrent against problem behaviour?
The presence of an adult
