At what age does the brain mature?
Around the mid 20s
What is adolescence?
A period of transitions (biological, psychological, social and economic) happening from around age 10-early 20s.
When is early adolescence?
Age 10-13
When is middle adolescence?
Age 14-17
When is late adolescence?
Age 18-21
What are the 3 fundamental aspects of adolescence?
1) Puberty
2) Emergence of more advanced thinking
3) Transition into new societal roles
What are some cognitive changes that happen in adolescence?
Hypothetical thinking, abstract thinking.
What are the main contexts where adolescents spend time?
Families, peer groups, schools, work and leisure.
What are the psychosocial developments that adolescents go through?
Identity, autonomy, intimacy, sexuality, and acheivement.
What are some psychosocial problems that arise?
Drug and alcohol use, delinquency, depression and other internalizing problems
What is the theory of recapitulation (G. Stanley Hall)?
Biosocial theory, the development of the individual parallels the development of the human species, instinct is a driving force (infancy=primitive stage, adolescence = development into civilization). Puberty causes upheaval and is unavoidable.
What is dual systems theory?
The simultaneous development of different brain systems 1) Rewards, punishments, social emotional information. 2) Self control, advanced thinking abilities. There is an imbalance between the two.
What is Eriksonian theory?
Adolescence is a conflict of the identity crisis
What is Piagetian theory?
Adolescence is the transition from concrete to abstract thought
What is adolescent marginality?
Difference in power that exists between adults and adolescents. Prohibition from occupying meaningful roles in society causes frustrations
