A

Adolescence is something we made up to explain changes- the definition of an adolescence can change with new social ideas, therefor social adolescence is much less clear than cognitive or biological

What are discontinuous transitions?

A

Abrupt transitions into new roles or status- more pronounced in western culture as the adolescent does not have enough preparation. Other cultures prepare adolescents better (continuous)

A

1) Separation from parents-separation individuation (separation of identity from parents)
2) Emphasis on gender norms-increased expectation to adhere to gender norms when teens hit adolescence.

What is emerging adulthood?

A

Age 18-25, applies to adolescents in western contexts. After 18, we still want adolescents to explore identity and further their brain development rather than head straight out into society. Could be a new phase of life.
