Lecture 4 Flashcards
What age does the brain stop developing at?
Age 25
What kinds of psychosocial development is supported by adolescent social transitions?
Autonomy, identity, intimacy (friends or partners), sexuality, achievement.
When does social adolescence start and end?
We have no clue bruh
What is social redefinition?
Process through which the status or position of the adolescent is redefined by society-varies cross-culturally
How is adolescence seen as a social construction?
Adolescence is something we made up to explain changes- the definition of an adolescence can change with new social ideas, therefor social adolescence is much less clear than cognitive or biological
Adolescence starts in ____ and ends in ____
Biology, culture. Easy to see where it starts, not as clear where it ends
What are continuous transitions?
Assuming new social roles and status gradually (smoother transition)
What are discontinuous transitions?
Abrupt transitions into new roles or status- more pronounced in western culture as the adolescent does not have enough preparation. Other cultures prepare adolescents better (continuous)
What are some common features of redefinition in western cultures?
1) Separation from parents-separation individuation (separation of identity from parents)
2) Emphasis on gender norms-increased expectation to adhere to gender norms when teens hit adolescence.
3) Transfer of info from elders
What is emerging adulthood?
Age 18-25, applies to adolescents in western contexts. After 18, we still want adolescents to explore identity and further their brain development rather than head straight out into society. Could be a new phase of life.
What is the number one predictor of youth outcomes?
