Q

What was the study done on Genes and Environment interactions with depression?

A

Shorter alleles in the 5-HTTLPR gene is associated with lower transcriptional efficiency compared to long, therefor the 5HTT gene may be involved in depression. Looked at individuals with s/s, s/L, and L/L genes and assessed stressful life events between ages 21 and 26. Depression was assessed at age 26.

7
Q

What was found in the gene and environment depression study?

A

Depression is not a purely genetic effect-life events increase depression more in people with s/s alleles.

Q

What is the diathesis stress model?

A

Older model positing a predisposing condition that puts you at risk for outcomes in certain environments. Positive outcomes are associated with more positive environments (regardless of genes), stress makes genes be expressed more negatively.

9
Q

What is the differential susceptibility model?

A

Base idea is the same as diathesis stress. Difference is that a good environment causes flourishing even if you’re original environment is negative.

Q

What were the results of the study done on outcomes with 2 authoritative parents versus one?

A

There were no differences between the two groups, except for with psychological and somatic symptoms (2 authoritative parents reported lower psychological and somatic symptoms). There were a few more differences when looking at consistent versus inconsistent authoritative parenting.

16
Q

What is the conclusion we can draw from the study done on amount of authoritative parents?

A

Authoritative parenting in general leads to better outcomes.

17
Q

What are the 10 principles of adolescent parenting?

A

1) what you do matters
2) You cannot be too loving
3) Be involved in your childs life
4) Adapt your parenting to fit your child
5) Establish rules and set limits
6) Help foster your child’s independence
7) Be consistent
8) Avoid harsh discipline
9) Explain your rules and decisions
10) Treat your child with respect

18
Q

What are some mesosystem influences in families?

A

Parent-sibling interactions, interactions between the 2 caregivers.

19
Q

Are younger or older children more advantaged in terms of affection?

A

Younger

20
Q

What is co-parenting?

A

Presenting a united front-same parenting style across parents.

21
Q

What was found in the study done on married immigrant Chinese Canadian couples with adolescent children?

A

Discrepancies in acculturation predict discrepant expectations on how much the child should help the family. Discrepancies were negatively related to co-parenting for both mothers and fathers, discrepancies in acculturation (Chinese) were also negatively related to the fathers perception of co-parenting

22
Q

What are some exosystem influences on families?

A

Neighbourhood resources, collective efficacy, parenting support at workplace

23
Q

What are some macrosystem influences on families?

A

Poverty, homophobia, structural racism

24
Q

What are some chronosystem influences on families?

A

Economic recession, colonization
