Psychosocial Problems/Positive Youth Dev Flashcards
What is the problem behaviour theory?
There are underlying clusters of risks that predict youth problem behaviour. Both risk and protective factors included. Risk is multiply determined.
What is the idea behind positive youth development?
Youth as an asset rather than a problem. Developmental process and an approach to youth programing. Idea that youth have assets to be developed, and if we do them properly, it sets them up for success.
What are the 4 external assets?
1) Support- Positive, caring relationships with adults
2) Empowerment - Encourage youth to act in communities, sense of purpose and value
3) Boundaries and expectations: Importance of clear and consistent messages across contexts, adults and peers who model positive behaviour
4) Constructive use of time.
What are external assets?
Assets here come from positive developmental experiences, relationships, and opportunities that adults provide.
What are internal assets?
Competencies, skills, and self-perceptions that youth develop over time.
What are the 4 internal assets?
1) Commitment to learning- Personal belief that values academic success
2) Positive values - prosocial values, helping, equality, social justice
3) Social competencies- personal skill, dealing with choices, challenges, and opportunities presented in the complex world
4) Positive identity: Self esteem, sense of purpose etc.
What is the idea behind positive youth development?
A strengths-based, ecologically nested framework of adolescent development. Youth strengths + developmental assets = positive developmental wellbeing, mental health. Measured by 5c’s framework.
What are the 5 C’s?
1) Competence
2) Confidence
3) Connection
4) Character
5) Caring
What is competence?
Positive view of own actions in certain areas
What is confidence?
Internal sense of positive self-worth and self-efficacy.

What is the idea behind social justice youth development?
Assets and youth strength, but a sole focus on this makes us lose sight of youth without access to these things. Current frameworks do not account for complex social, economic, and political forces.
How does social justice youth development add a structural lens?
Social toxins: Macrolevel beliefs that are oppressive and shape youth development. How are supports, opportunities, and risks within the adolescent development period shaped by oppression.
