What do inventionists argue?
That adolescence is mainly a social invention-adolescence is defined primarily by the ways in which society recognizes (or doesn’t) the period as distinct. Adolescence as concept did not exist before the Industrial Revolution
What did the distinction between adults and children used to be?
Property ownership
What happened during the industrialization that created adolescents?
New career uncertainty caused an increased importance for adolescence to remain in school-removal from workforce due to adult job insecurity OR child safety laws. Increased importance of peer groups.
When did the term teenager arise and what does it entail?
70 years ago. Suggests a less serious stage during which individuals are self-absorbed. Arose due to increased adolescent affluence in the 40s and 50s.
What are the 5 properties of emerging adulthood?
1) Exploration of identities
2) Instability
3) Self-focus
4) Feeling of being between adolescence and adulthood
5) Sense of possibilities
What is a status offence?
Behaviour that is deemed problematic because of status (ex: running away, skipping class are mostly juvenile offences)
When does the redefinition process begin?
15-16
What age group does the term youth encompass and why did it arise?
18-22, due to the increase in youth activism
What is a cohort?
Young people grouped with others who are approximately the same age–they move through transitions together
How has adolescence shifted in modern society?
Adolescents place less emphasis on roles and more on self=reliance. Psychosocial maturity as a sign of adulthood
What is one big impairment to a smooth transition into adulthood?
Poverty
What is collective efficacy?
Extent to which neighbours trust each other and share common values and count on each other to monitor youth. Poverty undermines this.
