Reactions and uses of esters Flashcards
Why are esters used in the food industry?
They have a sweet smell
What makes esters good solvents?
They are polar liquids and evaporate easily
Why are esters added to plastics?
To make them more flexible
What are the two types of hydrolysis?
Acid
Base
What is the equation for acid hydrolysis?
Ester + water -> carboxylic acid + alcohol
During acid hydrolysis what do you have to do to the ester?
Reflux with dilute acid such as HCl or sulfuric acid
During base hydrolysis, what do you have to do to the ester?
Reflux with a dilute alkali such as NaOH
What is the equation for base hydrolysis?
Ester + OH- -> carboxylate ion + alcohol
What is the product in both types of hydrolysis?
Alcohol
What are the two types of fatty acids?
Saturated
Unsaturated
What type of carbon carbon bonds do saturated fatty acids have?
Single
What type of carbon carbon bonds do unsaturated fatty acids have?
Double
Why are van Der waal forces stronger in saturated fatty acids compared to unsaturated fatty acids?
They can fit closer together
When you hydrolyse a fat/oil with sodium hydroxide, what are the products?
Glycerol and sodium salt (soap)
How is biodiesel produced from vegetable oils?
Reacted with methanol, using a strong alkali catalyst to get a mixture of methyl esters of long chain esters (biodiesel)
