Complex ions Flashcards
What is a complex ion?
A metal ion surrounded by co-ordinately bonded ligands
What is a co-ordinate bond?
Covalent bond where both electrons come from the same atom
What is a ligand?
An atom, ion or a molecule that donate a pair of electrons to a central metal ion
What is a mono dentate ligand?
Ligands that can only form one co-ordinate bond
What is a bidentate ligand?
Ligands that can only form two co-ordinate bonds
What is a multi dentate ligand?
Ligands that can form more than 2 co-ordinate bonds
What are some examples of a mono dentate ligands?
Ammonia
Chloride ions
Water
What is an example of a multi dentate ligand?
EDTA4-
What is an example of a bidentate ligand?
Ethane-1,2-diamine (NH2CH2CH2NH2)
How do you work out the oxidation state of a metal ion?
Total charge of complex - the sum of the charges of the ligands
What is the co-ordination number?
The number of co-ordinate bonds that are formed with the central metal ion
What shape does a complex ion with 6 co-ordinate bonds have?
Octahedral
What shapes can a complex ion with 4 co-ordinate bonds form?
Tetrahedral
Square planar
What is an example of an octahedral complex ion?
[Fe(H2O)6]2+
What is an example of a tetrahedral complex ion?
[CuCl4}2-
