Changing gas equilibria Flashcards
What is Le Chatelier’s principle?
If a reversible reaction at equilibrium is subject to change in pressure, temperature or concentration, the system will act to oppose the change by changing the position of equilibrium
Which way will the equilibrium shift if the temperature is increased?
In the endothermic direction to absorb the excess heat
Which way will the equilibrium shift if the temperature is decreased?
In the exothermic direction to release the extra heat
What will happen to the position of equilibrium if the pressure is increased?
It will shift to the side with the fewer moles of gas
What will happen to the position of equilibrium if the pressure is decreased?
it will shift to the side with more moles of gas
Does changing pressure affect Kp?
No - it will affect the partial pressures of all reactants and products so Kp wont change
Do catalysts have an effect on the value of Kp? Why?
No effect
It will increase the rate of both the forward and backwards reactions so equilibrium position will be the same
