HEMOLYTIC REACTIONS

A

. happens when the wrong type of blood is given to the patient (blood type mismatch)
. When wrong blood type is given, the body reacts by destroying the invading cells (hemolysis)*
. Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), blood in the urine and low blood pressure may be noted
. Transfusion must be stopped immediately, administration of fluids and cardiovascular drugs, treatment of bleeding

  • antibodies in recipient blood reacts with antigens in donor blood  agglutination and hemolysis of RBCs

What must the Surgical Tech do during a Hemolytic & Anaphylactic Reaction?

A

The ST must be aware that a life-threatening condition is occurring, must stay sterile and be ready to help as necessary

ANAPHYLACTIC REACTIONS

A

. Severe allergic reaction
. Constriction of airways, hypotension, shock may result
. EPINEPHRINE , intravenous fluids, respiratory support
. May be avoided by being aware of the patient’s history of allergies/administration of a test dose
