MAINTENANCE OF GENERAL ANESTHESIA Flashcards
Principles in the Maintenance of General Anesthesia:
1..Maintenance of the lightest level of anesthesia
2. Patient’s body must not be deprived of oxygen
3. Patient remains asleep
4. Patient is free from pain
5. Muscle relaxation must be present
Note: Proper amounts of muscle relaxation must be achieved throughout the procedure.
6. Autonomic reflexes/vital signs (blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, temperature) are constantly monitored
Note: Anesthetic agents affect the cardiovascular and respiratory systems.
Sites involved in pathway of pain
Nerve endings in a wound -> nerve -> paravertebral space -> epidural space -> subarachnoid space -> spinal cord -> cerebral cortex (sensory) of the brain
Pain stimulus may be blocked in any area along the pathway
