AUTOTRANSFUSION
A
. collecting blood aspirated from the operative field in a sterile container, “washing” it, and re-transfusing it (RBCs) to the patient at the end of the procedure
. expensive, requires special equipment
. not used unless a large amount of blood loss is expected
. lessens the need for blood bank blood
