MALIGNANT HYPERTHERMIA Flashcards
Rare, life-threatening complication seen in ..
children and adolescents which may be triggered by drugs used in anesthesia
frequently triggered by ?
Halothane (inhalation anethesia) and Succinylcholine (muscle relaxant)
Genetically transmitted as ?
a dominant trait (1: 50,000-100,000 anesthesias)
May be life-threatening why?
Contracture of skeletal muscles (muscle rigidity), marked temperature elevation (1 degree every 5 minutes), tachycardia, metabolic acidosis, hypoxia
May occur during?
induction or maintenance of anesthesia but can also occur postoperatively
All OR personnel must be familiar with the protocol of its management
. Treated with immediate infusion of Dantrolene, a muscle relaxant
. The anesthetic that triggered the reaction must be immediately discontinued and patient must be given 100% oxygen
. Relatives of affected patient must be investigated at a later time
