RBC Membrane and Structure Flashcards
What does lipid bilayer consist of?
Phospholipids
Sphingolipids
Cholesterol
Integral proteins (Band 3 and Glycophorin)
What % of membrane is lipid?
40%
What % of membrane is protein?
52%
What % of the membrane is Carbs?
8%
Carbs must be bound to lipids or proteins
The cytoskeleton contains:
Spectin
Ankyrin
Actin
Band 4.1
What are the two types of lipid?
Phospholipid
glycolipid
What are the parts of a lipid?
Fatty acid - hydrophobic
Back bone structure - fatty acid and head group binds
Head group - Hydrophilic
What does head group of a lipid consist of
Choline
phospholipid
glyceryl or sphingosine
Types of phospholipids:
Sphingomyelin Phosphotidylserine Phosphotidylcholine Phosphotidylethanolamine Phosphotidylinosital
What is Sphingomyelin?
phospholipid that consist of phosphocholine and ceramide
sphingomyelins can also be classified as sphingophospholipids.
What is ceramide?
ceramide is composed of sphingosine and fatty acid
they are a component of sphingomyelin or glycosphingolipids
Precursor substance for ABO chains on RBC
Ceramide > Glucose > Galactose (B1-4) > N-acetyl-galactosamine (B1-3) + Glalactose (B1-4)
Type 2 chains
Membrane transporters
cross the membrane several times
have C- and N- terminus and are N-Glycosylated
Band 3
Integral protein
the diego blood group antigen
anion exchanger
Band 3 and Glycophorin C anchor the membrane to the skeleton
Glycophorin A
M and N antigens
Intergral protein
Glycophorin A is heavily glycosylated = glycocalyx
