What was the background behind the Rebellion?
Many Irish had been badly treated by the British Government and prosecuted for religion under the Penal Laws.
Ireland was ruled by Small Anglican, Anglo-Irish miniority.
Why did things begin to change?
British liberals believed in greater freedom/decision making for the people. The two revolutions had more urgent calls for change.
Who were the United Irishman?
In 1791, a group of liberals, Protestants from Belfast formed Society of United Irishman.
What did the United Irishman do?
They accepted members of all religions and openly campaigned for Catholic Emancipation and democratic reforms.
Who was the leader of the United Irishman?
Theobald Wolfe Tone
What did Wolfe Tone attempt to do?
He attempted an Irish revolution, went to the US and France for support.
The French gave him a small force, however it was not enough as they were swiftly dealt with.

August 1798 (too late for effect)
