Who was Daniel O’Connell?
He was a lawyer who became first great 19th-century Irish national leader.
Where did he study and how did it affect him?
He studied in France, and left after the FR after what he saw he became a Pacifist.
When he got back to Ireland he joined the United Irishman (but refused to fight). 1798.
What happened in 1815?
O’Connell harshly criticized the Protestant dominant Dublin corporation.
He was challenged by John D’Esterre to a duel.
What happened in the Duel?
D’Esterre was killed by O’Connell.
What did O’Connell found in 1823
Catholic Association,
Cost 1p a year and it had 6 million members, the Government could not suppress it.
What did O’Connell do in 1828?
He stood for election to English parliament in County Clare with the backing of Church.
Why did O’Connell stand for election?
He did it as a Political Stunt, as he was elected and this made the English Government feared an uprising.
What was then passed as a result of this event?
Arthur Wellesley (PM at the time), passed Catholic Emancipation Act, 1829.
