Quiz 6 Vocab Flashcards
Allantochorion
A placental membrane formed by fusion of the allantois and chorion. When the chorion becomes vascularized by the allantois, then this compound layer is designated allantochorion or chorioallantoic membrane
Allantois
An extraembryonic membrane formed from the embryo; it fuses to the chorion and serves as a receptacle for fetal urine
Amnion
A thin membrane which forms a closed sac around the embryo. It contains the amniotic fluid, in which the embryo is immersed
Caruncle
Maternal sites for attachment of the fetal cotyledons. Form half of a placentome
Chorioallantoic membrane
A placental membrane formed by fusion of the allantois and chorion. When the chorion becomes vascularized by the allantois, then this compound layer is designated chorioallantoic membrane or allantochorion
Colostrum
The fluid usually only secreted by the mammary gland shortly after parturition and is important for passive immunity of the neonate
Endometritis
Inflammation of the uterine mucous membrane.
Eutherian mammal
mammals that develop a placenta.
Involution
The return of a tissue to its normal size
Lactational anestrus
lack of estrous or menstrual cycles due to suckling or the presence of young
Metritis
Inflammation of the uterus
Multiparous
A mammal which has had two or more pregnancies that resulted in viable offspring.
Neonatal
Pertaining to the first few weeks after birth
Nulliparous
having never given birth to viable young
Parity
The condition of a female mammal with regard to her having borne young
Parturition
The act or process of giving birth to young
Peristalisis
A wave of contraction passing a long certain tubular organs that possess longitudinal and circular muscle layers
Placentome
Made of a caruncle and a cotyledon. Location of nutrient/gas/waste exchange between fetus and dam
Primiparous
Bearing or having borne only one young or set of young
Pseudopregnancy
False pregnancy; a condition of the reproductive organs resembling pregnancy which is induced in certain mammals following sterile copulation (e.g. rat and rabbit) or occurs normally after ovulation (e.g. dog)
Puerperium
The period from parturition to the resumption of normal estrous cycles.
Pyometra
An accumulation of pus within the uterus
Seasonal anestrus
a period of anestrus that is induced by long (sheep) or short (horses) photoperiod.
Vomeronasal organ
an olfactory organ that is believed to be associated with detection of pheromones.
