Quiz 34 Flashcards
Where in a eukaryotic cell does anaerobic respiration occur?
Cytoplasm
Where in a eukaryotic cell does aerobic respiration occur?
Mitochondria
Which type of respiration releases more energy, aerobic or anaerobic?
Aerobic respiration
Define anaerobic respiration
Respiration that can occur in the absence of oxygen
Give 2 ways humans use the products of fermentation in yeast
Making beer and making bread
Write the word equation for anaerobic respiration in animals
Glucose—> lactic acid
Why is glucose important for respiration?
It contains stored energy which is released during respiration
Define respiration
A chemical reaction which releases energy from glucose
Write the word equation for anaerobic respiration in plants and fungi
Glucose——> ethanol + carbons dioxide
What is anaerobic respiration in yeast known as?
Fermentation
Describe and explain the changes to breathing rate, breath volume and heart rate when a person exercises
Breathing rate and breath volume increase to allow more oxygen to enter the blood and to remove more carbon dioxide. Heart rate increases to supply muscles with more oxygenated blood and to remove more carbon dioxide from respiring muscle cells
Where in a prokaryotic cell does respiration occur?
Cytoplasm
Give 3 reasons why organisms need energy
For chemical reactions to build larger molecules, for movement, to keep warm
Is respiration an endothermic or exothermic process? Explain
Exothermic because it releases energy
What happens to the lactic acid that is built up in muscles during vigorous or prolonged excercise?
Blood flowing through the muscles transports the lactic acid to the liver where it is converted back into glucose
